Odds and ends weekend
Erin and I celebrated Labor Day by continuing our quest for replacement windows in the Quad Cities on Friday, then heading over to Sterling, IL to visit Tom and Laura. Their new house is great. We went canoing on the Rock River Saturday, 9/2; it was a pretty nice trip though the river was low.
On the way there and back I read 199 close readings. Quite a few students are far from the mark, but enough are writing good stuff or at least in the ballpark. I get another set of essays tomorrow. In 480 I’m going to keep turning up the intensity. Right now it’s clear some folks are coasting.
Our garden is producing tomatoes like mad; we’ve been unable to harvest them quickly enough to prevent some from rotting on the vine. We’ve made sauce, salsa, and frozen roasted tomatoes too. Lots of compost! Erin also took a bunch of kale and red peppers, and she’s planted a new round of greens which are doing very well. We have a few carrots left and more on the way, and the squash are just about ready to harvest.
I spent a pretty good amount of time watching football the past few days, as the college season has started again. I was shocked to see TCU best Oklahoma, as were most, I imagine, but not surprised that last night’s Miami-Florida State game was a spectacle for sore eyes, offensively speaking. Both defenses played great. But if I were Mickey Andrews, I’d have gotten all Buddy Ryan on Jeff Bowden. His calls were pathetic—not as miserable as the Miami kicking game, or the Miami OL, for that matter, but it’s clear Bowden Jr. just doesn’t have a clue.

Who’s coasting?

Now now, you know I won’t say. FERPA and all that.
But the PowerPoint assignment seems to have motivated some people. I finally found a use for that program, I guess.

I hope I’m not coasting but I am worried that I will understand everything and be able to successfully use it.
