[...] I’m wondering if Arrington might want to do an Alexa dance on some of the other social bookmarking sites to verify if the trend is isolated to del.icio.us or if it’s web-wide. As CBD posted several months ago, del.icio.us clones are becoming quite ubiquitous. [...]

Todd, thanks for your post, and for the site itself. I'll continue to share my thoughts as I keep using ma.gnolia. As you folks grow, I'll be interested to see what portion of users use all the site's features.

I requested to be a user for Ma.gnolia, but no answer yet.

Thanks for the good review - I love reading stuff that has interesting ideas about alternative ways to think about a feature, so this is very welcome.

I think the advantage of separating the rating is that it provides one type of tag that is harmonized across all users. Where you use *** for a three-star tag, I might use 3-star, three-star, !!!, axxx - well maybe not that last one.

The point is that when we add star-rating to search criteria, you'll have a way of consistently searching by member-assigned quality markers, and that's a place where just tags for marking quality breaks down somewhat. I hope that illuminates some of the thinking behind the ratings. Thanks again for checking us out.

I do think Ma.gnolia at present hopes for a wise crowd rather than relying on the del.icio.us wisdom of crowds. I'm torn on the star rating system; activated by sliding across the number of stars, it looks slick (it's certainly better than the StumbleUpon "I Like It!" button), but the stars are too close and I can't tab through it.
