I can’t even figure out how to use tar on this machine; it doesn’t support flags like -z.

Yes. School. They do have emacs, even if it’s a few versions back.
I have often thought your achievement merited the Wrecking Crew Nerd of the Century Award. As I recall you performed said feat from userland.
I hope you saved a copy of that makefile.
