Ombudsmanship
ESPN has a new ombudsman. There’s no doubt the “worldwide leader” needs somebody in this position; their power on sports television is unquestionable, and conflicts of interest are rising—for example, consider that ESPN picked up a stake in Arena Football (Warning: Arenafootball.com is the Second Worst Sports Web Site Ever, right behind Gatorzone.com, so I link to neither for fear of killing Becky) when they added it to the ESPN lineup. Ron Jaworski owns a team and announces Arena games. Hrm.
But will Schreiber matter? previous ombudsman, George Solomon, was largely ineffective. Part of the reason is unquestionably the medium; as the rest of ESPN blasts away 24/7, with new columns, features, shows, and stories appearing continuously, Solomon wrote once a month, and it looks like Schreiber will follow. This is silly. Why isn’t she keeping a weblog? I can’t think of a better approach. And I mean an actual weblog, not this kind of crap.
Le Anne, if you read this, hop along to wordpress.com and get thee a better soapbox.

Hmm. Methinks I should extend a hearty handshake by way of thanks for having been spared. But does it complicate anything that one of my favorite students ever just recently exited arena football after a fairly long stint as quarterback of some damn team or another?
