After another topsy-turvy week in college football, South Carolina and Florida share the drivers’ seat in the SEC East. This is quite surprising–and not because of the Gamecocks. In what is arguably a rebuilding year, Florida has certainly exceeded my expectations. The defense has been mediocre, especially on third and fourth downs, but special teams and explosive offense have carried the day most times. It’s amazing Tim Tebow is in the Heisman race; not that I’m shocked by his play (any careful observer knows doubts about his passing ability were far overblown) but by this point in the year I expected someone else to have emerged. Doubtless some players were all but eliminated by their teams’ early losses (Hart, UMich; Brohm, Louisville; Ainge, Tenn).
Anyway, the Gators now face three SEC East games in a row, with one at home: Georgia @ Jax; Vanderbilt; @SoCar. On Nov. 10 they could be first in the East and on the way to Atlanta to face LSU, Alabama, or Auburn for the SEC championship–or dead last and looking to beat FAU and FSU to get bowl-eligible. Such is the way of this crazy season.
