Hey thanks for the info. I will see about that when I feel like I want to take the time to mess with it. I have just been trying to get used to the thing, and I have not carried it to school but once. *sigh*

@cbd: I got the Mini for MLA, actually. It's smaller and lighter than the Macbook (2 lbs vs 5), which makes it much easier to tote around, and it's usable on an airplane. Also, this way my main machine with my data stays at home on my desk. If the mini gets broken or stolen I'm out about $300, vs. $1500 or so for the Macbook.

@Michelle: The placement of the ' and ; keys drove me nuts at first. You can remap them pretty easily using Ukelele on the Mac or xmodmap on Linux; there's a similar utility for Windows, but I haven't used it.

Thanks all for comments. We found out that it's just the power supply, so we can resurrect the G5 for less than $300. That should buy us a little time.

Glad to hear two votes for the Dell Mini. @Erich, why both the Mini and the Macbook?

Wow, sorry to hear about your little problem with computing! I just recently received my new Dell mini in the mail, and there are some little things that I need to learn, and key placement leaves much to be desired, but I really do like what it can do. Mind you, this is without my external hard drive attached, since I haven't taken the time to mess around with it.

Megan and I both use 2.4 GHz Intel MacBooks--mine has 4 GB and hers 2 GB. She does a little video editing on her machine (Rowan videos for YouTube) and I used to simultaneously run PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, and other audio/visual programs on her machine (back when it was my machine).

So, we've given up on a desktop--but I don't know how much heavy lifting you need to do...

Would Erin be doing anything an iMac (especially an updated one) couldn't handle? I'm now running my Macbook in clamshell mode as my main computer, with a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 running Leopard (installed from legal retail DVD, vanilla kernel plus some Mini-specific drivers, runs great) as my mobile device. It's pretty sweet.
