Odds and ends Saturday

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Erin and Madelyn are in Colorado visiting Aunt Dee with Erin’s mom. So I’m trying to make the most of my solo time. Today, however, is a bit of a day off.
I ran a 5K this morning: 22:10 (7:09/mi) which is a personal best. Flat course, no wind, and decent weather. After I returned home, [...]

I hate long URLs

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Great idea, awful URL:
http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c701c789a0/index.jsp?pageID=mayor_press_release&catID=1194&doc_name=http://www.nyc.gov/html/om/html/2008a/pr229-08.html&cc=unused1978&rc=1194&ndi=1
216 characters. And I thought C|Net was bad. A redundant alphabetic processional:

portal/site/: in case the server forgets it’s a web site?
nycgov/: isn’t the nyc.gov domain enough to indicate that?
c0935b9a57bb4ef3daf2f1c701c789a0: sessions should not appear in the business part of URLs, but as variables. And 32 characters for a unique identifier? My math shows [...]

Cuts at Florida

Budget cuts at Florida: $47M. Enrollment too. Still not as bad as WVU’s fake degree…

Databases

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Jeff Atwood has a good post about WordPress and database optimization. I’ve often wondered why Dreamhost doesn’t tweak their “oneclick” install to enable select plugins. Certainly, in a shared hosting environment, addressing optimization would seem to qualify.
If as a commenter suggests suggests there’s a Google SoC project for this, good.

Interviewing @ MLA

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I was part of Western’s MLA interview team this year. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about interviewing, but I really enjoyed it, in large part because it went so well. It didn’t take Alice, Amy, and I long to settle into a groove, and most of our interviews turned out to be conversations [...]

Cancellation

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

I cancelled my classes this week on Wednesday to deal with a cancellation of sorts. Thursday I found out one of my Spring classes is being cancelled. A Friday meeting which I planned extensively for was cancelled. Today we were going to fly to Connecticut to visit my grandfather, but our flight was cancelled, and [...]

Break do list

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Still some work to do this semester, but I’m already thinking about the break. We aren’t traveling, so I’ll be able to knock a few things off the do list. Such as:

start running seriously again
develop accessibility testing protocol
read like a madperson
update spring syllabi
install two replacement windows
continue painting the exterior (weather [...]
