Topic of Study: Composition Pedagogies & Its Applications

Plan of Action: Through an initial series of discussions on common texts, we will branch off into areas of special interests. We will continue community discussions through the use of a weblog (http://wrecking.org/summer2008/) and occasional group meetings. Additional counsel provided by Prof. Dilger.

Resources to be used: We’ll start with these three texts:

  • Pemberton, Michael (ed). The Ethics of Writing Instruction: Issues in Theory and Practice. Ablex, 1999.
  • Shaughnessy, Mina. Errors & Expectations: A Guide for the Teacher of Basic Writing. Oxford, 1979.
  • Tate, Gary, Amy Rupiper, and Kurt Schick (eds). A Guide to Composition Pedagogies. Oxford, 2000.

Additional texts will be added as needed, given student interests which develop out of this introductory reading.

Outcomes to be achieved: Seminar paper or equivalent. Extensive research experience in particular field of interest related to writing; building preparation toward Engl 690: Thesis.

Expected date of completion: project proposal by June 20, draft by July 15, final by August 10.

Number of hours sought: 3

Faculty sponsor: Prof. Bradley Dilger
